Abstract : Screw connections are used in almost all technical fields, whereby it is of particular interest to know the exact behavior of this component. One failure mechanism is the so called self-loosening. The cause for this is the torsional moment in the screw shaft. This moment is caused by the thread pitch, the pretension force in the screw and the frictional moments at the screw head and in the thread. Relative displacements between the screwed parts, which lead to additional frictional forces in combination with the resulting moments, yield to the self-loosening of the screw connection.
With HyperWorks and the solver OptiStruct it is possible to build up suitable FE models and simulate them. Furthermore, there can be done studies to determine the influence of certain parameters such as the clamping length, the pretension force and the particular coefficients of friction. The aim of these simulations and studies is to understand and improve the bolted connections as fast as possible without physical prototypes and testing. For such simulation models it is also necessary to know the most important numerical influence parameters like the mesh size or contact settings which affects the convergence behavior. Finally, this allows a simulation-driven design verification of bolted connections which leads to a reduction of time and costs in product development processes.
