Abstract : Radial turbocharger turbines in today's passenger cars combustion engines run under unsteady operating conditions. Pulsating exhaust flow drives the turbine with varying inlet conditions yielding dominant operating conditions at low blade speed ratios.
Due to the steady state power balance between compressor and turbine on a standard hot gas test stand such operating conditions can not be measured. Measurement of efficiency and swallowing capacity at these operating conditions is essential for the development of improved turbines and turbocharger matching. Furthermore gas exchange simulations deliver better results relying on measured data compared to today's extrapolated efficiency maps.
This paper presents a measurement procedure on an extended hot gas test stand to
investigate turbocharger performances at engine-like operating conditions. The procedure is based on exploiting the rotational inertia to increase turbine power demand and to yield low blade speed ratios.
